Peter teamed up with Pat McKenzie from OLI at ACHEMA this year. They visited clients and prospective clients interested in bringing flowsheet simulation into their project planning.

Peter also presented the following at ACHEMA :

Electrolyte Process Design Using OLI Flowsheet: ESP

Abstract: Modeling of processes involving electrolytes can be done using several commercial process simulators. For most of them, OLI Systems, Inc., New Jersey, USA, a pioneer in electrolyte modeling since more than 45 years, offers interfaces for their aqueous or mixed-solvent electrolyte models. In 2016, OLI has released a program of their own development, OLI Flowsheet: ESP. For processes, where electrolytes are predominant, the new simulator is the tool of choice. By way of an example of industrial significance, extractive distillation for separating hydrochloric acid, the presentation demonstrates the productive utilization of OLI’s electrolyte simulator for process design. While in a simulation case the structure of the process is known along with its specifications, the design task aims at the structure itself, and the solution of this problem usually involves a target-oriented sequence of simulations. In a clear and lively manner, the presentation illustrates in detail the classical steps from a specification to a feasible process system: Defining the process design target, validating the thermodynamic model, configuring the physical property models in the simulator, and performing the sequence of design steps, guided by an easy-toimplement logic. Although the process design method is shown by example, it can be interpreted as general in scope. There is a fundamental idea behind, having the potential to uncover designs, which are non-conventional, but unique and convincing.
